Oral and dental diseases are widely prevalent throughout England. Dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal (gum) diseases are the most common oral diseases, and most people will experience these during their lifetime.  The impact of oral disease includes pain, days lost from work and school, and adverse effects on peoples’ quality of life.

Similar to most areas of healthcare, prevention of ill-health and reduction of inequalities in health is a key focus. Oral diseases are largely preventable, and effective self-care alongside professional support is crucial for good oral health.

The impact of poor oral health disproportionally affects vulnerable and socially disadvantaged individuals and groups in society*. Our Smarter Smiles dental care professionals, working in collaboration and partnership with PDSE and Cornwall Council, are tackling these inequalities.
